Interview to DJ Shah

Shna: I can't wait to listen them all!! I guess I'll have to stick to listen to your wonderful sets which can be heard through the internet until the day we are lucky enough to see you live! When are you coming to Spain? Julio, a friend from Solotrance, invites you to his house if it's necessary hehe

Roger: I have no plans at the moment, because of no contacts to clubs or event organizers, but if someone read this interview and invites me to an event I promise you that I will come for sure.

Shna: I hope it will be very soon and that you tell us whenever you know about a possible date!! Now I would like to ask a technical question that a friend of mine told me to J My friend Pol admires a lot your remix of "The first Noel", he also remixed it himself for a contest, and he wants to know how did you work with that track in order to get such a nice result. How did you start? What did inspire you? When did you know it was finished? Etc.

Roger: First I must say that it was unbelievable and a big surprice to receive a request from Nettwerk, the label of Sarah McLachlan to do a DJ Shah Remix for the "First Noel" song during all other producers have to battle their talents in a remix contest. They heard my song "Beautiful" which I did together with Jan Johnston and they wanted me to go a bit in this direction. So I started with the drum programing which I did a bit similar to my own song. My main inspiration has been Sarah's unique and beautiful voice and the great harmonies from the original composition.
I think that a producer always feel when a production is finished.

Shna: That has been an awesome lesson mister! So let's follow with technical things. Tell us now how did you start to produce music and mixing tracks.

Roger: When I produce a new track, I start to compose & write the song first. I play the chords and compose the main melody. Then I start with the beat programming and when I have recorded all elements I do the full song arrangement from the beginning to the end and also think about the additional mixes and versions.
As DJ I swaped from playing with vinyls and CDs to play with my laptop with ableton live software. Especially as a producer it's simply amazing what possibilities you have during a live performance.

Shna: What's your equipment nowadays?

Roger: I Work with a Mac G5 dual core and Logic 7 as sequencer and I have a lot of plug inns as Native Instruments Complete and all the other great software stuff as Albino, Nexus, Venguard and also some hardware synth legends as JP 8080.

Shna: amazing!! And what do you enjoy best: producing or mixing?

Roger: I love both. The best combination is to produce a new track and play it to the crowd and see the reactions of it.

Shna: Now I'd like to ask you a rhetoric question… Why do you make music? Is there something apart from the fact that you like it?

Roger: No, as I told you I'm interested into music since I can remember. I have a classical music education, can read notes and I also work as a DJ since 14 years, so I think that it has been a natural way for me to make music also as my job.

Shna: Raúl, a friend from solotrance, is interested in knowing your opinion about dance music nowadays and if you would change something about it.

Roger: I think that it is ok as it is. At the moment electro is the main music style and you can find these influences in all genres, in house and trance productions, but this will also change as always. It's really hard to change something if you want it, so I think it is more important to find your own way and style into this scene.

Shna: Now it's Jose who wants to question you something. He wants to know if your trips have inspired you in some way at the time of producing your tracks.

Roger: Yes, I got all my inspiration from my trips to all those beautiful countries.

Shna: Well I'd like to know better you, Roger, before finishing this interview. May I ask you some personal questions? Answer only if you want to!

Roger: OK

Shna: I think that generally, trance listeners are very dreamer. Would you like to share some of your dreams with us?

Roger: Oh, I'm not really a dreamer, but I hope that the people can dream when they listen to my music.

Shna: Choose a book, a film and a Vinyl.

Roger: I do not read, Lord of the rings, Paul Oakenfold - Southern sun

Shna: How would you define yourself?

Roger: Hard working, friendly and also a shy person

Shna: You couldn't live without…

Roger: Air:-) my family is very important for me.

Shna: Which music and other things did you like when you were a child?

Roger: Heard all kinds of music. Played football and Tennis. Still playing Tennis...

Shna: What's the first thing you think about when you wake up?

Roger: Damn, what time is it?

Shna: Well, I hope you have enjoyed the interview as much as I've done. Would you like to say anything before finishing it?

Roger: I also want to thank you for all this questions. To find out something more about me and to keep updated you can also visit me at www.djshah.net or be my friend at www.myspace.com/rogerpshah . I will answer to all questions for sure.
