Interview to DJ Shah

Roger P Shah is the man behind his most well known alias: DJ Shah. This German started to pick up very few time ago the results of a very hard work since 1996. His style is the purest Balearic Trance with tendencies to progressive house and tribal music. His melodic tunes, makes us remember the beach and the summer; his sets, simply amazing, makes us travel throughout time. Yes, he deserves what he is getting.

Shna: It's a pleasure for me to interview one of my favourite dj's/producers lately. Thank you so much for this Roger!

Roger: Thank you, it's a pleasure for me, too.

Shna: Let's start for the beginning. A lot of people know you for your latest and successful productions such as "White Sand", "Sunday Morning", "Beautiful", "One Night in Tokyo", etc. But we almost don't know anything about how did you begin, so tell us ¿How did you start to dj/produce?

Roger: I've been interested into music as long as I can remember. I`ve studied reading notes at school and started to play keyboard when I was 14. I became a member in a cross over cover band as a keyboarder and played there for 3 years. I went off because I started to learn the DJing and a bit later in 1996 I started to work as a DJ in a great Trance club in my hometown and did my first own compositions and tracks. This was the beginning for me to get into music and also into the electronic music scene. Got my first signed deal also in 1996 and developed my sound from cheap commercial stuff to the high quality music I'm doing right now.

Shna: Wow, I see it's been a long time! I guess that during all this time you would have lived many hard moments in which you thought you would never reach far with your music. What did you do in those moments in which giving up seemed the cleverest thing to do? What gave you strength in order to carry on and think you could reach your dream one day?

Roger: I guess you right, sometimes this kind of business is really hard. I think that the most important thing is to believe in yourself, do what you want to do and never give up. It's also important to have a good background from your family and real friends. I have a strong wife at my side and she's always been there for me in the harder days. It's really a dream for me that I can say that me job is producing music and djing all over the world.

Shna: Without any doubt, it's a very rich experience and I'm very glad to prove day by day, that dreams come true whenever people keep fighting for them. Which advices would you give to the people who are fighting for a long time and are forgetting their dreams because they think they will never get them?

Roger: Believe in yourself and never give up and it's really important to work hard for your dreams.

Shna: I'm sure that many people who read this interview will be very grateful for your support J Tell us now, Which have been your biggest influences in order to reach this style that makes you so special today? (I mean dj's/producers, songs or some ordinary things of daily life!)

Roger: My biggest influences are the sun, summer, Ibiza and all other beautiful places. When I produce a new song, I close my eyes and imagine how it would be to hear this tune during a sunset watch or by driving around the island.
I gave my sound the name "balearic", because it's moody, atmospheric and reminds me always of a summer holiday. People are describing my music as "Trance", but for me it is much more than that, because I have so many different influences and styles in my productions from different genres and I also love to record real instruments especially guitars and percussive elements

Shna: One of the weirdest things for me was to notice that you are German. German producers have been famous for being the best while we are talking about hard trance and suddenly… you came with a very Balearic style. Do you think that your country conditioned you in some way?

Roger: In the beginning of my career, I also did that typical German hard trance stuff, but after some years I realized that I'm not really happy to produce just this kind of music and I tried to discover a new kind of music for me and developed my sound into the style for which I'm known now. But with this kind of music it was really hard for me as a German producer to find any new deals, because the labels in Germany are not releasing this kind of music. So i put it out on my own small label and after some time I got the attention of all the big DJ's from all over the world.

Shna: Let's talk about your tracks: "White Sand" was one of the best tracks of past year for a lot of people (I'm one of them YAY). How did you feel when you saw the success you got day by day? Have you ever imagined getting that successful?

Roger: When I finished this song I felt that it has something special and that it is very different to all the other current stuff, but I couldn't imagine to have such a big hit with this record and I also have to thank Armin van Buuren who has signed the track for his company Armada and has hammered it for a long time in every set.

Shna: You already have a lot of quality productions, but I'm sure you have your own favourite one… don't be shy! Tell us what your favourite is!

Roger: At the moment I'm so happy with me new and upcoming single which is a collaboration with the unique and very talented singer Adrina Thorpe. "Who will find me" is the title and can also be heard on Armin's new A State of Trance 2007 CD. The first reactions from the people are unbelievable and much more than I received for my white sand hit.

Shna: During the current year we have already enjoyed new tracks such as "Aguas Blancas" and "Palmarosa", and I have to say that we can't wait to listen to your new tracks. Tell us something about your incoming productions!

Roger: Oh, there is so many upcoming stuff, because I'm really a workaholic. Let me tell you something about the most important upcoming releases. As I told you in the last question, DJ Shah ft Adrina Thorpe - Who will find me (Armada) is really important for me, with huge feedback and good chances to be a big crossover hit around the world. I received hundred of mails from fans from around the world just in fact that the heard it on Armin van Buuren's ASOT 2007 CD. On this CD you can also have a listen to the new "Sunlounger - In & Out" single. I have also finished my work for my full "Sunlounger" artist album which will be released around July and I made it as a kind of a soundtrack for this summer. I produced a full 2 CD package, CD 1 with chill out versions, CD 2 with club/dance versions of my composed tracks. I hope that the people will like it as same as my record company.

At the moment I'm very busy in producing my DJ Shah solo artist album which will be also released on Armada. It has the working title "my balearic song book" and will feature a lot of different singers and songwriters from all over the world and from really different genres. It's a hard work but also amazing to work with all those wonderful artists and singers.

Also a new release under my "Global Experience" alias is coming on Tiesto's Blackhole label and will be again a two tracker called "Malaysia/Madras".

I have so many upcoming tracks that it's pretty hard to tell you something about every single track. Here's a list of some upcoming stuff:

Purple Mood - One Night in Tokyo - Anjunabeats
Epos - Adagio Espressivo - Tsushima/Shah-Music
Balearic Session ft Seis Cuerdas - Flamenco Mediterraneo - Magic Island
Black Pearl - Coral Sea - Shah-Music
